Brighterman Meets: Luke Todd - September 5, 2011
Luke Todd is a name, which seems to be placing it’s mark on the fashion industry. The assistant editor of FashionBeans.com is seeing some great success at the tender age of 20. Having blessed the readers of FashionBeans with articles since 2009, Luke also fronts the “ask the expert” team via there Twitter and Facebook, dealing with questions from the modern day man. Today, Luke shares with you five top ways to wear colour.
Five ways to wear colour:
Luke Todd, Assistant Editor of FashionBeans.com
After a pallid, anaemic display of wardrobe attrition – one that has taken the best part of a decade to put right – men are finally keen to pay reverence to their sin.
I’m not quite sure when it happened. It got to a point – some time in the past few years – when it was at its most noticeably worst; when sporting a coloured neckerchief or giving way to a paisley pocket square was seen as simply uncouth. Men found themselves gravitating towards a rather abrupt, unceremonious, almost impolite abandonment of chroma. More fool them.
At last, we’ve acquired a convivial attitude when it comes to style. We want to dress, and we want to impress (perhaps that’s where the old, hackneyed term stems from.)
No dividends will be paid for flouncing in the direction of an iridescent neglection. This is the how to. How to fold, knot, slip, slide, wrap, strap and pull your way towards colour, with gusto!
Pocket squares – once the bête noire of hygiene – are now the staple of dandies (providing they’re moved to pocket if ever used.) Learn how to correctly puff your pocket square or be confined to the sobering aesthetic of a fold.
Luke chooses: Our Red Pocket Square
A good tie (although knotted at the neck) is a delicate operation (the dimple even more-so). A good tie matters. It makes the man matter. Matter-of-factly. Use a statement bow tie – find one unworn by those who partake in business metaphors – to elevate you off the level playing field and inject some colour into an otherwise dull affair.
Luke chooses: Dark Blue Bow Tie
Winter delivers us with a sombre palette. However, this shouldn’t mean brusque disregard for our lighter hues. Instead of weightier neckwear, pair a vibrant summer scarf under the lapels of a suit jacket or play it off again the neutral tones of a charcoal jumper for maximum impact.
Luke chooses: Light Pink Summer Scarf
Men often lament parting with money. It’s the reason so many are first out of the taxi and last to the bar [we never forget and we always notice]. Investing in a boldly emphatic wallet will make the departure of notes an all the more pleasing experience.
Luke chooses: Mustard Green Tag Wallet
The all signing, all dancing wardrobe of the 21st century is a minefield; a litany of dos and don’ts that require an educational aptitude higher than expected of modern man to negotiate. Err on the side of caution with a playful time teller. Anchor your look with accents of colour.
Luke chooses: Orange Plastic Watch
So these are five great ways to add colour to your look, in a timeless fashion. These accessories are going to add a dash of automatic colour to any look, without a great deal of effort being applied on your part.
We also caught up with Luke at the recent Topman Fragrance launch party, and got some advice for AW along with an insight into whats in the pipeline for FashionBeans.
A thanks goes out to Luke, and Topman for the invite!
